Fatal Accident Update: Car driver in custody, no breathalyzer test taken – police

Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on Sunday January 25, 2026 about 23:30hrs on the Diamond New Interlink Road, East Bank Demerara, involving a minibus and a motor car, which resulted in the death of Jason Bhojedat, 33, of Annandale, East Coast Demerara (driver of the minibus) and injuries to a 31-year-old male of Diamond New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, who was a passenger in the minibus.
Preliminary investigations revealed that motor car PKK 6633 was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane allegedly at a fast rate behind minibus BAK 8702 when an attempt was made to overtake, resulting in a collision with the right rear of the minibus.
As a result of the impact, the minibus collided with a light pole, overturned several times and came to a halt on the western parapet. Bhojedat was flung from the vehicle and fell onto the roadway in an unconscious state.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor on duty. The body was later removed and taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The passenger from the minibus and the driver of the motor car sustained injuries and were taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where they were treated and subsequently discharged.
The driver of the motor car, a 28-year-old labourer of Diamond New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, is presently in police custody assisting with the investigation. A breathalyzer test was not conducted on the driver due to injuries he received to his mouth, for which he received stitches.
Investigations are ongoing.
