A Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), man was killed on Friday night after he was run over by a truck while reportedly lying on the public road.
Dead is 53-year-old Mark Songster of Lot 6 Section ‘C’ Fyrish Road, Corentyne, Berbice. The accident occurred at about 20:10 hours on Fyrish Public Road.
At the time, motor lorry #GYY 5720 was proceeding west along the southern drive lane of the said road at a normal rate of speed.
Police say initial investigations revealed that Songster was lying on the southern driving lane when the lorry ran him over, causing him to receive injuries to his body.
As a result of the injuries received, the pedestrian was picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined by the Doctor on duty (GMO) who pronounced him dead on arrival.
His body was thereafter taken to the Ramoo Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The driver, a 43-year-old resident of Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice, was taken into custody, assisting with the investigation. A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver, and two readings were obtained, showing 11 micrograms of alcohol in his breath.
The truck has since been lodged at the Albion Police Station, where it is expected to be examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer.
Investigations are continuing.
