A 25-year-old taxi driver of Five Miles Housing Scheme, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) has been granted bail in the sum of $200,000 after being charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Reon Speede, called “Pooh,” was charged in connection with a police operation that led to the discovery of suspected cocaine at Two Miles Bartica, Potaro Road, Essequibo River.
Speede appeared on Monday before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, where the charge under Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10, was formally read to him.
He pleaded not guilty to the allegation and the case was adjourned to July 2. Police reports revealed that the charge stems from an operation conducted on Saturday, between 21:00h and 22:00h, during which police ranks carried out an anti-narcotics exercise in the Bartica area.
During the operation, ranks reportedly observed Speede driving a motorcar and moved in to intercept the vehicle. It is alleged that he exited the car and attempted to flee the scene, but was pursued and apprehended.
A subsequent search of his person allegedly uncovered a small transparent bag containing 18 zip-lock bags with a whitish powdery substance suspected to be cocaine. The narcotics were weighed in his presence and amounted to 12.2 grams.
