Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment services are being expanded across Guyana, with regional hospitals gaining access to diagnostic imaging and specialised oncology care.

Mammography services are now available at Suddie, Linden, New Amsterdam and Lethem regional hospitals, complementing services at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

The expansion is allowing women in the regions to access breast screening closer to home, reducing the need to travel to Georgetown for diagnostic imaging.

At GPHC, the establishment of a new pathology laboratory is also strengthening the diagnosis of breast cancer. The facility is capable of distinguishing between different types of breast cancer, providing information that can help guide treatment decisions.

Oncology services have also been strengthened, with the oncology clinic at GPHC expanded and a new oncology clinic established at New Amsterdam Hospital.

Alongside improvements in diagnosis and treatment, community education initiatives are being used to promote breast health and encourage early detection, which can support timely access to care.

International partnerships are also contributing to the development of cancer services, including collaboration with Mount Sinai to strengthen specialised care and support efforts towards the establishment of a national oncology centre.

The expansion of services forms part of a broader effort to improve access to breast cancer care, particularly by increasing diagnostic and treatment capacity outside Georgetown.

The effectiveness of these investments can be assessed through indicators such as the stage at which patients are diagnosed, waiting times for diagnosis and treatment, treatment completion rates and long-term survival outcomes. [DPI]
