The Guyana Government will curb the large-scale importation of fruits already produced locally to help farmers secure better markets and returns for their produce, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said. The measure is not a ban and will not apply to exotic fruits that are not produced in Guyana.

Mustapha said he has instructed the National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) not to issue permits for large quantities of locally produced fruits.

As part of Agriculture Month 2026, the Government has also introduced regular farmers’ markets to connect producers directly with consumers and provide access to affordable produce. A weekly market will be held at Sophia every Wednesday, with monthly farmers’ markets planned in other regions.

Mustapha said local farmers are producing significant quantities of food but are not always receiving adequate returns for their efforts. The Government therefore intends to strengthen market opportunities and ensure farmers benefit more from their production.

The Minister also highlighted the need for farmers to prepare for changing weather conditions, including possible drier periods and higher temperatures associated with El Niño. He stressed the importance of preparedness, water management and climate-resilient agricultural practices.

Agriculture Month 2026, being observed under the theme “Innovate, Nourish, Grow: Building a Strong and Sustainable Guyana,” will include farmers’ markets, the inaugural Farmers’ Conference, Honey Fest and World Food Day activities, with a focus on knowledge sharing, market linkages, innovation, technology and investment in the agricultural sector.
