The Ministry of Housing has commenced engagements with residents occupying an informal settlement along the riverbank at Riverview, Ruimveldt, following a commitment made by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, during a community engagement in the area last month.
On Tuesday, Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, visited the area as part of the follow-up process. He was accompanied by Director of Community Development, Gladwin Charles, and other technical staff from the Ministry.
The Ministry has begun documenting the families and structures within the settlement. One-on-one engagements are also underway to gather information and better understand the circumstances of each family.
The information gathered will guide the next phase of the initiative, including relocation arrangements and interventions to address social issues affecting residents.
Minister Croal noted that the process will involve collaboration with other Government agencies, including the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and Minister Oneidge Waldron, who has political responsibility for the area.
The initiative forms part of the Government’s wider effort to address squatting and unregulated settlements through solutions such as relocation or regularisation, depending on the circumstances of each community.
The Minister emphasised the Government’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen has access to a safe, clean and healthy living environment.
