Two men remain under medical observation at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) utility pole along the Palmyra Public Road, East Canje, late Friday night.

According to police sources, the accident occurred at about 23:30h and involved motor car PYY 5455, a vehicle owned by Massey Motors and assigned to the company’s New Amsterdam branch.
The vehicle was being driven by 40-year-old Ramkumar Ramaligan of Number Two Village, East Canje, Berbice. Also in the vehicle was 41-year-old Anwer Sathik, also of Number Two Village.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle was proceeding west along the southern carriageway of the Palmyra Public Road, when the driver reportedly lost control and slammed into a GPL utility pole on the northern side of the road.
The impact of the collision left the vehicle extensively damaged, with its front end torn away, the roof crushed and the driver’s side badly mangled. The force of the crash also caused significant damage to the utility pole.
Police ranks who responded to the scene found both occupants unconscious inside the wrecked vehicle. They were removed from the vehicle and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where doctors treated them for head injuries and internal bleeding.
Both men remained in the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit under observation. However, due to the seriousness of the driver’s injuries, investigators were unable to administer a breathalyser test.
Police sources further indicated that investigators have identified a CCTV camera in the vicinity of the crash and are seeking to review the footage as part of their investigation into the accident.
