Pedestrian killed by reversing lorry along ECD roadway

A 54-year-old resident of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was on Wednesday killed by a reversing vehicle along the Haslington Railway Embankment Road, ECD.

The dead man has been identified as Shawn Gittens.

Police stated that the accident involved a motor lorry registered to China Railway Construction and was at the time driven by a 36-year-old Chinese national of Lusignan, ECD.

Based on reports received, the motor lorry was engaged in paving works on the southern carriageway of the Haslington Railway Embankment Road, and was reversing when the pedestrian allegedly walked behind the vehicle and was struck.

Due to the injuries received, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Police have issued a notice of intended prosecution to the driver, who remains in Police custody assisting with the ongoing investigation.
