Eid-ul-Adha is a reminder of placing something greater than ourselves at centre of how we live – PM Phillips
MESSAGE BY THE HONOURABLE PRIME MINISTER BRIGADIER MARK PHILLIPS ON THE OCCASION OF EID-UL-ADHA 2026:
Assalamu Alaikum (peace be upon you) and Eid Mubarak to everyone in Guyana!
Today, we join our Muslim brothers and sisters to observe Eid-Ul-Adha, an occasion that calls us back to our values through faith. This observance arrives each year as a reminder of the importance of placing something greater than ourselves at the centre of how we live.
The story at the heart of Eid-Ul-Adha is profound. Prophet Ibrahim, faced with the most unimaginable test of faith, did not waver. His submission to the will of Allah was absolute and rooted in love, and it gave the world a living lesson that transcends time and tradition. What is remarkable is that such a lesson can be applied to both the Muslim community and all of humanity, teaching us that true sacrifice is about what we affirm by giving of our best.
In Guyana, we understand sacrifice because our country was built on it. The generations before us sacrificed comfort and certainty so that we could stand where we stand today. And it is no coincidence that the values at the core of Eid-ul-Adha: selflessness, compassion, and solidarity with those who have less, are the very values upon which Guyana has always leaned in its best moments.
To our Muslim brothers and sisters who have made the Hajj this year, we welcome you home with pride. To those gathered with family in prayer and celebration, know that your joy is Guyana’s joy. And to all who participate in the tradition of Qurbani, sharing meat with neighbours, the poor, and the vulnerable, you are embodying the spirit of generosity and compassion to your fellow man, and that is an important expression of love that we must always remember, even as we work to build our country together.
I extend my deepest respect and warmest wishes to every Muslim household in Guyana on this blessed occasion. May Allah shower you with peace, good health, and abundance. May your prayers be answered, your families be kept safe, and your hearts remain open to one another.
Eid Mubarak, Guyana!
