Guyana touts telemedicine, other healthcare advancements at CASMET meeting

Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, delivered the feature address at a regional gathering hosted by the Caribbean Association of Medical Technologists (CASMET), underscoring Guyana’s rapid advancements in healthcare delivery and innovation.

During his remarks, the Minister welcomed regional delegates to Guyana and highlighted the country’s ongoing transformation within the health sector. He noted significant investments in infrastructure, with over 450 public health facilities providing free healthcare services nationwide.

Dr Anthony emphasised the integration of technology to expand access to care, including the implementation of telemedicine services across more than 150 hinterland locations, enabling real-time consultations and diagnostics. He also outlined advancements in healthcare training through hybrid nursing programmes, with approximately 800 nurses expected to graduate in 2026.

Further developments include the expansion and modernisation of laboratory services, the rollout of digital health records, and the introduction of artificial intelligence systems to support medical imaging and diagnostics.

The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems through innovation, ensuring improved access, quality, and efficiency of services for all Guyanese.

The engagement also recognised CASMET’s longstanding contribution to advancing medical laboratory science across the Caribbean under its guiding principle, “We save lives by our skills.”
