Set up & you’ll be removed same day – Edghill warns roadside vendors in Berbice
Public Works Minister Juan Edghill has issued a stern warning to persons seeking to set up vending along road shoulders where the Corentyne Highway is being widened, making it clear that anyone who attempts to do so will be removed the very same day, with no prior notice.
“Any new vending along any thoroughfare where the project is being executed, no notice will be given,” Edghill said, as he addressed stakeholders, stressing that the measure will apply across all areas where construction is underway.
He reinforced the point with a blunt warning to would-be vendors: “The same day you come out, the same day you leave the road.”
The Minister made it clear that there will be no exceptions or special treatment for anyone attempting to occupy road shoulders along the corridor, even as he cautioned local officials against intervening on behalf of individuals.
“Nobody will come and tell me, ‘Oh, he is a Comrade’…” Edghill stated, underscoring that enforcement will be applied equally.
As works continue to expand and upgrade sections of the Corentyne Highway, authorities are ensuring the road reserve remains clear to support construction and improve safety for road users.
Edghill also directed local government bodies, including Neighbourhood Democratic Councils, councillors and other officials, to ensure that the message is clearly communicated within their communities and adhered to as the project progresses.
The Government has maintained that strict enforcement will be necessary to safeguard the integrity of the multi-billion-dollar infrastructure works, with residents and vendors being urged to comply with the regulations as development continues along the corridor.
