Govt cracks down on irregularities in public assistance assessments in Reg. 5
Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr Vindhya Persaud on Tuesday met with several key stakeholders in Region Five, including staff of the Ministry’s Fort Wellington office, members of the Local Board of Guardians (LBG), and Senior Regional Health Officers.
During the meeting, the Minister addressed a number of important issues surrounding the permanent disability (PD) benefits. She highlighted concerns about the legibility of doctors’ handwriting on assessment forms, which can make it difficult for LBG members to accurately review cases.
She also raised the issue of persons being recommended for permanent disability despite not meeting the necessary criteria. Minister Persaud emphasised the critical role of honesty and accuracy in the completion of these forms, urging doctors and health officials to be truthful and thorough in their assessments.
She noted that permanent disability and other forms of public assistance support must be reserved for those who genuinely need it.
Additionally, the Minister encouraged LBG members to strengthen their presence within communities, so they can better assess and verify the circumstances of applicants, ensuring that assistance reaches the most deserving individuals.
