President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Tuesday evening called on hundreds of young people gathered at Loo Creek to embrace strong values, leadership and faith, as he addressed the Seventh-day Adventist Caribbean Union Conference’s “The Greatness II Camporee.”
Delivering an inspiring message under the theme “The Rise of an Empire,” the head of state emphasised that true greatness is not built on power or control, but on character, integrity and service.
“You are blessed with leadership, vision and compassion,” President Ali told the assembly, urging the young campers to appreciate and build on the strong foundation laid by their church.
The president said the camporee must serve as a transformative space for youth development, declaring that the gathering should produce future leaders grounded in faith and moral strength.
“This camp will produce the Timothys of tomorrow, leaders who lead by example… the Josephs of tomorrow? men and women of integrity… the Davids who will defeat giants with courage… the Esthers who will serve selflessly, and the Jeremiahs who will rise above insecurity,” he said.
Highlighting the deeper meaning behind the camporee’s theme, President Ali explained that while empires in history were often defined by dominance and wealth, they ultimately fall when they lose their moral compass.
Instead, he encouraged young people to focus on building a different kind of “empire”, one rooted in enduring values.
“It is not about ruling over people, it is about building people up,” he emphasised. “This kingdom is built on truth, humility, justice and care for others.”
Referring to the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Guyana, President Ali reflected on its humble beginnings in 1887, when missionaries arrived in Georgetown and established a small congregation with only 32 members.
Despite early challenges, including difficult travel conditions to reach remote communities, the church grew steadily.
Today, it boasts more than 200 congregations across the country, playing a vital role in education, youth development and community service.
“That is greatness. That is phenomenal growth,” the president said, applauding the church’s contribution to national development.
Encouraging personal responsibility, President Ali urged youths to pursue discipline, respect and continuous self-improvement, reminding them that meaningful growth requires effort and commitment.
“Focus on personal growth. Stand up for what is right. That is how values grow,” he said.
The camporee, which brings together participants from across the Caribbean, continues to serve as a platform for spiritual enrichment, leadership development and regional unity among young Adventists. [DPI]
