The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Induction Course 1/2026 concluded yesterday, Monday, March 16, 2026, with 63 persons graduating during a closing ceremony held at the Officers’ Training Centre,

Delivering the feature address was Crime Chief, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr. Wendell Blanhum, who congratulated the participants on successfully completing the programme.

In his remarks, Blanhum noted that many of the graduates would have experienced sleepless nights during the training, but said that their hard work and commitment had paid off. He explained that the participants began the course with little or no knowledge of the intricacies of criminal investigations, emphasising that detective work is far different from what is often portrayed on television.

He further disclosed that, prior to the commencement of the programme, 120 persons from the Guyana Police Force had applied to become detectives; however, only a select number could be accommodated in the classroom. Those who were not selected will have another opportunity to participate in the next CID Induction Course, which is scheduled for September.

Deputy Commissioner Blanhum also highlighted the importance of collaboration with external agencies, noting that investigators play a critical role in protecting life and property, maintaining law and order, and preventing and detecting crime. He encouraged the graduates to remain focused, develop sharp analytical and observational skills, and stay resilient in the face of challenges.

The course was designed to develop the requisite investigative skills of participants, enabling them to understand and apply procedures in criminal investigations. Its objectives included orienting inductees to their roles as investigators, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle criminal investigations, and enabling them to articulate informed opinions on crime scene analysis and investigative responses.

Participants included members of the Guyana Police Force, along with representatives from external agencies such as the Guyana Revenue Authority, and the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit.

During the ceremony, certificates were presented to the graduates, followed by awards to outstanding participants.
