Govt addressing issue at Wakenaam Solar Farm under contractor warranty – Indar
The government is currently working with the contractor to rectify an issue developed at the 750 kWp Solar Farm at Wakenaam, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) which was commissioned in June last year.
The 750 kWp Solar Farm is part of the UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF). The US$2.3 million investment featured advanced PV modules, inverters, and battery storage systems designed to stabilise the grid and store excess energy for use during periods of low sunlight.
Responding to allegations made by Opposition Member Ganesh Mahipaul, Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar explained that shortly after it was commissioned, a fire occurred causing damage to the battery energy storage system (BESS).
Indar noted that the area was contained and all necessary safety protocols were immediately implemented to protect personnel, equipment, and the immediate environment.
There was no impact to the Solar PV Farm or surrounding infrastructure, he added.
In fact, the minister said the PV plant itself remains, intact, safe, and fully functional.
He added that the solar generation assets did not sustain damage and are capable of producing electricity.
However, he said GPL decided against using solar power without the battery system because of the frequency fluctuations it cause, which can potentially damage generation assets.
“The Solar PV Farm and BESS are under warranty and GPL is working with the Grantor to return the BESS to normalcy. In parallel, GPL has proactively engaged other suppliers to ensure timely restoration of the full hybrid system functionality. Multiple site assessment were already completed and solution to remedy is being provided. The battery system is expected to be replaced in 8 weeks time,” Indar said.
