Timothy McGarrell, a 24-year-old labourer of Timehri Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, has been charged with Introducing Narcotics into Prison, contrary to Section 7(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10.
The offence was committed on February 17, 2026 at the Lusignan Prison.
He appeared on Wednesday February 18, 2026, at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce, where the charge was read to him.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and fined $30,000.
McGarrell had been arrested after officers conducting routine searches at the Lusignan facility, East Coast of Demerara (ECD), discovered a quantity of cannabis concealed under the soles of his slippers. According to prison officials, the discovery was made during a checkpoint search upon his arrival at the prison. The narcotics were confiscated, and McGarrell was taken into custody before being handed over to the police.
