A fire on Tuesday evening destroyed a house at Onderneeming Sand Pit, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), leaving eight persons homeless.
The blaze gutted the wooden structure, displacing the occupants, including four school-aged children. No injuries were reported.
The Difficult Circumstances Unit of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security conducted a site visit and assessment following the incident to determine the immediate needs of the affected family.
The mother of the household, Romona Baychu, is employed as a cook in the interior. One of the displaced occupants, Kevin Boyan, is confined to a wheelchair and is currently receiving support from the Human Services Ministry.
With their home reduced to ashes, the family has been forced to seek temporary shelter.
The four children are now staying at a friend’s residence.
Investigations are ongoing.
