Hero Highway expansion underway to improve traffic flow, reduce commute time
The Heroes Highway on the East Bank Demerara (EBD) is currently being expanded to enhance traffic flow and travel times for commuters who rely on the major thoroughfare.
Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Dr. Martin Pertab on Friday inspected the ongoing works, noting that the visit forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure contractors deliver the project within the stipulated timelines. Accompanying CEO Pertab were Senior Engineer, Anthony Ragnauth, Surveyor, Mr. Shaquille Mayers, and other key technical staff.

The expansion project entails the construction of additional traffic lanes along the corridor from Haags Bosch Road to Massy Road.
During the inspection, Dr. Pertab underscored the increasing importance of the highway, particularly with traffic flow from Region Three via the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.
“The Heroes Highway has become one of the busiest corridors on the East Bank, and it is critical that traffic, especially vehicles coming from Region Three on the Bharrat Jagdeo River Bridge, moves efficiently ” Dr. Pertab said.
The roadway also serves as a key link for commuters travelling along the Ogle to Eccles Highway.

Works under the project include asphalt pavement construction, the building of concrete drainage structures, installation of metal guardrails, and road markings.
The project is being executed in five construction lots: Lot One – 500 metres, Lot Two – 350 metres, Lot Three – 480 metres, Lot Four – 750 metres, and Lot Five – 710 metres, with each lot being constructed by different contractors.
