Fatal BJDRB accident: 23-Y-O unlicenced truck driver remanded, owner gets bail
A 23-year-old unlicenced truck driver has been remanded to prison in connection with the deadly accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge (BJDRB) on Thursday.
Jomel Kenny of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara (WCD) appeared today before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court where he was slapped with several charges including driving without a licence, breach of insurance and faulty packing of load. He pleaded not guilty but was remanded to prison.
Kenny was the driver of motor lorry GAC 296, which reportedly developed mechanical issues and rolled backward into several vehicles, causing a major collision which resulted in the death of 24-year-old Scott Dorwart and injuries to others.
The owner of the truck, 55-year-old Antonio Johnson of Anna Catherina, was also charged with breach of insurance and permitting an unlicenced driver to operate the vehicle. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of $50,000.
