One person has died while one is in a critical condition following a six-vehicle collision on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge this morning.
This was confirmed by Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh.
The critically injured person was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The accident occurred when a truck traversing along the bridge encountered mechanical issues, causing it roll back onto ongoing traffic.
The truck driver told reporters “when I climbing, going up the hill…the gearbox cut pon me…Me try hold the brakes but the brakes didn’t holding back no more, and the truck now start run down. I tried brace the rail…but I couldn’t…”
Eyewitnesses said the truck first crashed into a bus and then into other vehicles.
The Traffic Chief confirmed that resources are being deployed to aid the removal of immobile vehicles on the bridge.
