Police seize 23 grams of ganja, $3M in cash during Bartica operation; 40-Y-O arrested

Police in Regional Division # 7 are investigating the discovery of a quantity of suspected cannabis following an intelligence-led operation conducted on Friday January 23, 2026 between 10:30hrs and 11:20hrs at Fifth Avenue, Bartica, Essequibo River.
Preliminary investigations revealed that police ranks conducted a search at the residence of a 40-year-old self-employed male and found thirteen (13) zip-lock parcels containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis in the living room area.
Further searches resulted in the discovery of cash amounting to $3,009,440 Guyana currency.
The 40-year-old was arrested and escorted to the Bartica Police Station, where the suspected cannabis was weighed in his presence and amounted to 23.2 grams. The suspected cannabis and cash were lodged pending investigation.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
