The process for electing the Leader of the Opposition will be held at 10:00hrs on Monday, January 26.
This was announced by Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir.
He said it was up to opposition members to decide whether they believe it will be morally right to elect an international fugitive as Opposition Leader.
“I trust that those involved in this process of electing the Leader of the Opposition would be guided by the dignity of the House, the reputation of our country, and the sanctity of the responsibility that has been entrusted upon them by the electorate,” Nadir noted.
The election process will be done before the presentation of the 2026 Budget by Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for finance Dr Ashni Singh.
Guyana’s 13th Parliament convened and swore in 65 Members of Parliament (MPs) on November 3, 2025, at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) following the September 1, 2025, General Elections.
Of the 65 MPs, 36 represent the governing Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) while the others form the Parliamentary Opposition: 16 represent the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), 12 represent the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), and one represents the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM).
The members that comprise the Parliamentary Opposition will elect someone among them to the post of Opposition Leader.
