Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of 513 grams of cannabis at the New Amsterdam Prison in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
The illicit substance was found on Monday at around 15:10hrs on the southern side of the prison, the police said.
“Acting on information received, a Prison Officer discovered a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis at the said location,” the police explained in a statement.
Following that discovery, the police were summoned and the suspected cannabis was handed over and escorted to the Central Police Station.
The cannabis was weighed and amounted to 513 grams before being lodged pending further investigation.
