Budget 2026 will be presented on Monday, January 26 – the government has announced.
As is customary, it will be presented by Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance Dr Ashni Singh.
Dr Singh has already reminded that the budget will include measures and initiatives in keeping with the 2025 manifesto of the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C).
This year’s Budget will be the first Budget presented to the Parliament following the People’s PPP/C’s successful re-election to office led by President Dr Irfaan Ali.
The party’s manifesto was crafted after extensive and inclusive consultation with the private sector, religious organisations, youth and women groups, and every Guyanese citizen at large.
A key promise included in the manifesto is the building of 40,000 new homes within the next five years. Budget 2026 is also expected to introduce direct financial support for home construction and home upgrades.
Building safer and more comfortable communities is another goal of the party which will be delivered through the building out of concrete drains, installation of streetlights and security cameras, and upgrading of recreational spaces.
Meanwhile, among the major infrastructural projects outlined in the manifesto are the construction of a new four-lane bridge across the Berbice River and the construction of a new Corentyne River Bridge.
The party also committed to constructing a new terminal at CJIA and building municipal airports at Lethem and Rose Hall, as well as upgrading hinterland airstrips across the country.
To ensure that the Guyanese people have more disposable income and that cost-of-living pressures are cushioned, over the next five years, the PPP/C said it will maintain its policy of no new taxes throughout all the budgets that it will present.
The party also committed to lowering taxes generally, including: lower income and corporate taxes.
President Ali has already revealed that special tax incentives for agro-based businesses as well as animal-rights organisations and veterinary hospitals and clinics, will be introduced.
Specifically, he had announced that his government will introduce a new taxation system where SMEs in the agriculture sector could pay little to no corporate tax.
Ali had also previously revealed that his government is considering the implementation of either a special tax incentive or a direct cash transfer to parents of children with special needs. He had also announced that the government will create special tax incentives for families led by single mothers.
Budget 2026 is also expected to provide the fiscal space necessary to support the distribution of a $100,000 cash grant to every adult citizen.
