Police are investigating a fatal accident that claimed the life of 59-year-old Winston Hinds of Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, following a collision with a cow along Republic Road on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred at about 18:00h and involved motorcycle CP 8186, which Hinds owned and was riding.
Initial investigations revealed that Hinds was allegedly proceeding at a fast rate of speed when he collided with the cow that was walking across the road.
As a result of the impact, Hinds was thrown onto the roadway, sustaining severe injuries to his head and body. He was picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision are continuing. The death has left family members and residents of the New Amsterdam community in mourning.
On Thursday, Police Commander Assistant Commissioner Shivpersaud Bacchus, accompanied by senior ranks, paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family at their Levi Dam residence.
Commander Bacchus and his team met with the widow, Beverly Embrack, and their children and extended condolences on behalf of Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken and the Executive Leadership Team.
During the visit, the commander expressed sympathy and reassured the family that the Police are actively pursuing the investigation into the fatal incident.
He told the family that every effort would be made to ensure that the matter is thoroughly examined and that justice would be served.
The latest incident has renewed calls for stronger enforcement against owners who allow animals to wander onto public roads, especially along busy thoroughfares.
Meanwhile, Police have again urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly during low-visibility hours, and reminded livestock owners of their responsibility to secure their animals to prevent similar tragedies.
