A Port Mourant grandmother is pleading for answers after her newborn grandson was reportedly uplifted from the New Amsterdam Public Hospital without the family’s knowledge.
Shanti Sookoo, 43, said she last saw the baby on Thursday, November 28. When she returned the following day, hospital staff told her the infant had already been signed out by someone she does not know.
“I just want my grandchild back,” Sookoo said. “This is my first grandchild. I raised four children. I can take care of him.”
Her daughter, 20-year-old Keshma Jagdeo, delivered the baby at home around 1:00 a.m. after being sent away from the Port Mourant Hospital the previous day. She cut the umbilical cord herself before her mother rushed both of them to the hospital.
Sookoo said officers from the Child Protection Agency visited their home weeks earlier, claiming the family’s living condition was unsuitable.
“They say this house not good, but plenty babies living in places worse than here,” she argued.
The family is calling on authorities to explain who collected the baby and why the mother was discharged without the child. They have not been able to confirm whether the child was taken into State care.
