Govt mulls special tax incentives or direct cash transfers for parents of children with disabilities – Pres. Ali
President Dr Irfaan Ali has announced that his government is considering the implementation of either a special tax incentive or a direct cash transfer to parents of children with special needs.
“We’re working out a mechanism to give special tax incentives and special support for parents who have children living with disabilities. Because we know sometimes, at least one of that parent, would have to stay home to take care of that child. So, we want to have an incentive system that will also help that parent, either in tax incentives or direct transfer, so that those children can also be taken care of,” President Ali announced today during an outreach in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
In August, President Ali had similarly announced that the government will create special tax incentives for families led by single mothers.
Already, the government has introduced a special tax measure that saw adults with children benefitting from increases in their income tax threshold.
Under the initiative, a parent can benefit from $10,000 per month per child as a deductible for one parent on taxes due. This means a parent can save $120,000 per year per each child.
Additionally, the government provides a one-off $100,000 cash grant for every newborn baby born in Guyana to a Guyanese mother. The initiative was launched in March 2025 and applies retroactively to all newborns born on or after January 1, 2025.
