A total of $81.09 million has been distributed to 954 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) students under the government’s 2026 Because We Care Cash Grant programme.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) announced the figures in a Facebook post on Tuesday, confirming that the distribution for Grade 12 and Grade 13 students took place on October 2, 2026.
Each student received $60,000 under the Because We Care Student Grant, an additional $20,000 in transportation support, and a $5,000 uniform voucher, bringing the total assistance to $85,000 per child.
The transportation grant is a new addition to the programme, introduced alongside an increase in the core student grant from $50,000 to $60,000.
The changes fulfil commitments made by the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) government in 2025 to expand financial assistance for schoolchildren.
The additional support is intended to help parents and guardians manage the expenses associated with sending their children to school, including transportation and uniforms.
The CAPE payments followed the distribution of grants to students at other grade levels in public and private schools across Guyana, bringing the 2026 rollout to its final stage.
The programme is backed by a $17.5 billion allocation in Budget 2026 and forms part of the government’s continued provision of direct financial assistance to families with school aged children. [DPI]
