20-Y-O construction worker remanded for Port Mourant murder

A 20-year-old construction worker was today remanded to prison after appearing before the Whim Magistrate’s Court charged with the murder of a fellow drinking companion during an altercation at Haswell, Port Mourant, Corentyne, earlier this week.

Parmeshwar Lionel, called “Small Man” of Lochaber, West Canje, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy to answer the indictable charge, which alleges that on July 6, 2026, he murdered 27-year-old Naresh Seecharran, known as “Cat Man,” a labourer of Glasgow, East Bank Berbice.

Lionel was not required to plea to the indictable offence and was remanded to prison until July 30, when the matter is scheduled to be called again.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Vaughn Paul told the court that investigations are continuing and that the prosecution’s file remains incomplete. He explained that investigators are still awaiting the post-mortem report, forensic analysis and an additional statement from the investigating officer before the case file can be finalised.

The prosecutor then outlined the allegations against the accused, telling the court that Lionel, Seecharran and several other men had gathered at a house in Babu John, Port Mourant, where they had been consuming alcohol on the night of the incident.

According to the prosecution, the group had been drinking, dancing and joking together before the atmosphere changed and an argument developed between Lionel and Seecharran at about 22:10 hrs.

Sergeant Paul alleged that before the confrontation, Lionel had been seen carrying a black knife, approximately six inches in length, tucked into the pocket of his pants.

The court heard that during the altercation, Seecharran allegedly pushed Lionel to the ground before running into the house. The prosecutor said Lionel allegedly got up and pursued the older man into the building.

Moments later, Seecharran reportedly emerged from the house bleeding profusely from a wound to the left side of his neck while shouting that Lionel had stabbed him.

Persons at the scene rushed the injured man to the Port Mourant Public Hospital in an effort to save his life. However, medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.

The court was further told that an examination of the body revealed what appeared to be a stab wound to the left side of the neck.

Following the incident, police launched an investigation and later arrested Lionel at Number 19 Village, Corentyne. He was taken into custody at the Whim Police Station, where the investigation continued before the murder charge was instituted.
