Suspect confesses to murder of Corentyne fisherman

Police are investigating the alleged murder of Umar Muqthar Jumai, called ‘Muggy’, a 40-year-old fisherman from Grant, Crabwood Creek, in Corentyne, Berbice. The alleged murder occurred between 22:00 hrs last night and 08:00 hrs today (Monday) at Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek.

At about 08:00 hrs this morning, a Corentyne labourer observed Jumai in a drain on the eastern side of the street. He was in a seated, slumped-over position, with his feet submerged in water. The labourer alerted the neighbourhood police, and the matter was reported to the Police.

Detectives examined the body at the scene, and a three (3)cm wound was observed on the abdomen. Jumai’s body was clad in a brown shirt and green trousers and was in a state as previously described. The deceased man was found with a cutlass and a ‘Rambo’ knife in the waist of his pants. The body was escorted to Skeldon Public Hospital, where it was examined and pronounced dead by Dr. Henry.

At approximately 15:00 hrs today, the suspect Nigel Garnette, also known as ‘Nancy’ was interviewed by detectives. During the interview, the suspect confessed to stabbing the deceased once in the abdomen.

A video-recorded interview and a caution statement were obtained from the suspect. Additionally, a video walkthrough was conducted with him at the crime scene.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
