A pensioner was on Friday evening allegedly struck down and killed by a drunken driver along the Le Ressouvenir Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD). Dead is Ramroop Sadaram, 71, of Success Housing Scheme, ECD.

Based on reports received, the accident occurred at about 23:45h and involved a motorcar bearing registration number, PAB 9943 which was at the time being driven by a 48-year-old businessman of Good Hope, ECD, Ramroop and a motorcycle, CN 8838, driven by a 27-year-old Construction Worker of Bachelor’s Adventure, ECD.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the motorcar was proceeding east along the roadway when the driver alleged that he heard a loud sound of a motorcycle and as he looked into his wing mirror, he suddenly felt an impact to the front and rear of his vehicle.

As such, he stopped and exited his vehicle and saw the now-dead man lying on the roadway along with the motorcyclist – both with injuries on their bodies.

The Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) were summoned to the scene where Ramroop was pronounced dead. On the other hand, the injured motorcyclist was picked up in a conscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted a patient.

The driver was arrested and a breathalyzer test proved that he was under the influence of alcohol. Investigations are ongoing.
