Riding on the high from the recent fundraisers, the People Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) hosted another successful event on Friday evening in preparation for the upcoming General and Regional Elections slated for September 1.
Held on the lawns of the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown, Friday night’s fundraising dinner saw more than 10,000 persons in attendance.
President Dr Irfaan Ali lauded the widespread support that the party has been receiving.
“It’s just a mad wave of support …and what you see here today is the PPP/Civic at work. Look at this crowd, all of Guyana is represented – every ethnicity, every group, every religion, and that is what we’ve been doing, building national unity [and] building our country,” President Ali told Trinidad and Tobago’s television host, Ian Allenye, on the sidelines of the dinner.
Similarly, PPP General Secretary Dr Bharrat Jagdeo hailed the success of the party’s recent fundraisers.
“The momentum is with us. People recognise that in five short years, we’ve been able to transform this country and put it in a different trajectory …This massive dinner here is a testimony to what is happening. We’ll win the elections, we’re not [being] arrogant about it [but] we’re working hard,” Jagdeo declared while also speaking to the popular T&T television personality.
Only on Thursday, the PPP General Secretary had lauded the success of the party’s recent Fundraising Dinner held at Leonora, West Coast Demerara (WCD) in Region Three last week.
He noted that there were approximately 8,000 people in attendance as he commended the party’s representative in Region Three for hosting such a massive event.
“In that region alone to pull this off, we had nearly 1500 volunteers who work diligently to pull that off and I don’t think any political party here or I dare say in the Caribbean could have pulled off an activity of that nature the way we did,” he boasted during his weekly Press Conference on Thursday.
The fund-raising dinner on June 20, is among a list of activities being hosted by the party to raise revenue for its elections campaign.
He said there were another 2,000 people who were unable to make it to the venue, and he apologised to the many Region Three residents who found themselves stuck in traffic for hours that evening.
“I want to apologise to all of the people who were stuck on the road, I don’t think the arrangements were in place and then at one stage, you had four lanes of traffic going in one direction on a road that was a two-lane road,” he explained.
“I want to once again apologise for any inconvenience caused to people, I don’t think they anticipated that level of success,” Dr. Jagdeo added.
The party has also hosted Fundraising BBQ & Family Funday at the Everest Cricket Ground in Georgetown, which the General Secretary also hailed as a massive success.
