Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary was marked in New York with a flag-raising ceremony and reception at the Helen Marshall Cultural Centre in Queens, where officials highlighted national progress, unity, and the role of the diaspora in the country’s continued development.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Michael Brotherson said the Diamond Jubilee was being observed through a series of commemorative activities across New York, including an aerial flyover displaying a large Guyana flag over areas from Lido Beach to Brooklyn.

He also noted that the anniversary theme, “The Homecoming,” was promoted on subway station displays throughout the month of May. Brotherson thanked the Consulate General of Guyana in New York, the Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN), members of the Guyanese community, and local officials for supporting the event. He said the collaboration reflected strong community engagement in the celebrations.

Reflecting on Guyana’s independence on 26 May 1966, Brotherson recalled the lowering of the Union Jack and the raising of the Golden Arrowhead at the National Park in Georgetown, describing it as a defining moment in the country’s political history. He said the occasion symbolised the end of colonial rule and the expression of national unity under the motto “One People, One Nation, One Destiny.”

He outlined key areas of national development over six decades, including infrastructure, healthcare, food security and economic growth. He also referenced Guyana’s evolving role in regional integration, its participation in CARICOM, and its current economic expansion driven in part by oil and gas development and major infrastructure projects. Brotherson also highlighted ongoing efforts to defend Guyana’s territorial integrity in relation to the Essequibo region, expressing confidence in the International Court of Justice process. He pointed to continued investments in national development projects and social programmes aimed at broadening public benefit.

Important role of Guyanese abroad

Turning to the diaspora, he said Guyanese abroad play an important role in national development through investment, cultural preservation and support for families. He encouraged diaspora communities to engage further through business, education, and public service, describing the “Homecoming” theme as an invitation to reconnect and contribute to national progress.

Also addressing the ceremony, Guyana’s Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, said the 60th anniversary represented a moment for reflection on the country’s history, struggles and achievements. She noted the long period of colonial rule preceding independence and paid tribute to those who contributed to the country’s political freedom.

Rodrigues-Birkett said Guyana’s development journey had been shaped by both challenges and progress, including economic and political transitions, migration and institutional change. She referenced the country’s current development trajectory, describing it as one of rapid transformation supported by investments in infrastructure, education and social services. She also highlighted Guyana’s international engagement, including leadership roles held by Guyanese nationals in global institutions and the country’s service on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

She said Guyana’s foreign policy positions have increasingly focused on international law, climate change and development issues affecting small states. On the Essequibo controversy, she reaffirmed Guyana’s position that the matter is before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and expressed confidence in a ruling consistent with the 1899 Arbitral Award.

Recommit to development

Both speakers emphasised the importance of national unity, religious harmony and ethnic cohesion, while urging citizens at home and abroad to recommit to the country’s development. They also called on Guyanese in the diaspora to remain engaged as the country continues what they described as a period of significant transformation.
