Essequibo couple nabbed with cocaine, ganja remanded to prison

Police along the Essequibo Coast, Region Two arrested a couple (husband and wife) on Thursday after a search of their home at Good Hope unearthed a quantity of marijuana and cocaine.

At about 14:17h on the day in question, acting on information received, Police ranks went to the home of Shameena Budhoo, a 56-year-old woman of Good Hope, Essequibo Coast.

On arrival, they informed the woman that they were there to conduct a search for Firearms, Ammunition, and Narcotics. The woman’s husband, Otis Gouveia, was also present at the time. Otis accompanied the ranks to the bottom floor of their premises to conduct the search.

In the process of searching, one of the ranks raised a carpet on the floor where he found a plastic bag containing 76 pieces of whitish substances suspected to be Cocaine, wrapped in foil paper. The ranks also found four small bags containing a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be Cannabis.

A further search of the premises revealed three battery scales, six cellphones (three Samsung and three BLU), one smoking utensil, $9,790 Guyana currency in various denominations and two cigarette lighters.

The couple was arrested and taken to the Aurora Police Station along with the suspected narcotics. When weighed, the cocaine amounted to 15.1 grams, and the cannabis amounted to 4.3 grams.

They were placed in custody and later on Friday and remanded to prison.
