“Comfort in medical care” as $6.6B new Diamond Regional Hospital commissioned

Residents along the East Bank Demerara corridor will benefit from improved healthcare services with the opening of the new modern Diamond Regional Hospital.
The $6.6 billion fully air conditioned state-of-the-art facility is outfitted with modern diagnostic equipment for a host of critical healthcare services, including ultra sounds, ditigal xrays, and CT scans.

It has a 75-bed capacity, three operation theatres, several five-bed wards, a dental suite, ICUs and HDUs, neonatal facilties, and a 24-hour pharmacy and laboratory, among other ancillary features.
Delivering the feature address at the commissioning ceremony earlier today (Saturday, June 8, 2025), President Dr Irfaan Ali noted that this world-class facility meets the minimum standards in China, United States and the United Kingdom.

According to the Head of State, this is an investment in people of Guyana especially those residing on the East Bank.
“This is an investment that will ensure our women and children, our elderly and our male folk all alike have a level of treatment here that is not based on income, that is not based on your status, that is not based on where you are from – a level of service that is equivalent to any service you can pay for anywhere in Guyana.”
“This is an investment in the people of our country, an investment that will increase the life expectancy of the citizens of our country, an investment that will give you comfort in which you receive medical care, and we must not take these investment lightly,” the President noted.

The new Diamond Regional Hospital will be staffed with approximately 70 healthcare professionals, including specialist doctors like cardiologists.
Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony explained that these specialists will be at the new hospital on a rotational basis to offer consul services. That way, he added, residents along the EBD corridor will also benefit from high-quality, advanced care.
In addition, the facility is also equipped with modern technology as part of efforts to digitalize the healthcare system.
Among the technology is a digital monitoring system that tracks the amount of time doctors and/or nurses spend with hospitalised patients.
The new Diamond Regional Hospital is one of six hospitals being built across Guyana to enhance healthcare delivery and access for citizens.
China’s Sinopharm International is partnering with the Guyana Government to build the six regional hospitals, funded by a $37.2 billion partnership. These hospitals will be located in Regions 2 (Lima), 3 (De Kinderen), 4 (Diamond and Enmore), 5 (Bath), and 6 (Skeldon and No. 75).
