The Government of Guyana on Saturday commissioned the 3MWp Prospect Solar Farm in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), marking yet another major milestone in the country’s nationwide rollout of utility-scale renewable energy projects.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, said the commissioning reflects disciplined execution and strategic focus. He commended the contractor for meeting the delivery schedule and noted that the new facility will strengthen GPL’s operational capacity, enhance power security, and support the modernisation of a grid geared at industrial expansion.

He emphasised that Guyana’s investments in renewable energy form part of a coherent national strategy. He said they are designed not only to meet global clean-energy standards, but also to ensure the country keeps pace with rapid domestic development. The Guysol installations, he noted, will deliver reliable electricity to thousands of households across multiple regions, creating an integrated nationwide energy architecture that supports long-term growth.

The Prime Minister added that the project sends a clear signal that Guyana is advancing the transformation of its energy matrix, positioning the country as a regional leader in utility-scale renewable energy deployment. The GUYSOL Programme, he further stated, has also become a reference model for promoting gender equality in technical fields and ensuring that investments create durable economic and social value.

Some 31 women have been trained through the project.

He concluded that the Prospect facility stands as a symbol of national progress and a commitment to a resilient, sustainable energy future.

GPL’s CEO, Kesh Nandlall highlighted the technical and financial details of the project, noting that it was developed under the Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL) and represents an investment of $1.2 billion.

He reported that the solar farm consists of 4,928 solar modules, mounted on corrosion-resistant structures and supported by eight high-efficiency PV inverters. The system is engineered to withstand wind speeds of up to 244 km/h and is connected to the Demerara–Berbice Interconnected System through a newly built 13.8kV spur line feeding into the Canefield F3 distribution feeder.

“Once fully operational, the Prospect Solar Farm will generate approximately 4,800 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually—enough to power thousands of homes—while offsetting over 3,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide and saving an estimated $210 million in fossil fuel costs each year,” he disclosed.

The Prospect facility is now the third large-scale solar plant commissioned in recent weeks, following the launch of the 3MWp Hampshire solar farm (Region 6) and the 5MWp Onderneeming facility (Region 2).

Under GUYSOL, a total of eight solar farms totalling 33MWp are being constructed across Regions 2, 5, 6, and 10. In Berbice alone, Prospect, along with Hampshire and the soon-to-be-
