The vehicle registration series has moved from PAK to PAL in just three months, indicating that 9,999 vehicles were registered with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) over this period.

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday said, “if this is not a sign of prosperity or progress then nothing is, because not all of these will come in for wealthy people, a lot of ordinary Guyanese are acquiring more…”

Jagdeo pointed out that this is also a clear indication of his government’s investment in people, so they have more disposable income and can acquire more assets.

“Since we’ve been in office in the five years, in the public sector, public sector workers are earning $105 billion per year in wages and salaries…more than 2020…I’ve argued that with 60,000 more persons also working at the fastfood places, Starbucks, hotels, at expanded taxi services and other professions – that’s the private sector disposable income growing too,” he emphasised.

He added that if this trend continues, it would mean that close to 40,000 vehicles are imported on an annual basis, necessitating the need for additional roads and other infrastructure.

Against this backdrop, Jagdeo criticised the opposition’s negative utterances on the construction of roads and other infrastructure across the country.

“If we don’t expand the infrastructure of the country to accommodate this, every one of you will be frustrated, like I am sometimes [even though] I have sirens. This morning…I got stuck with a police vehicle ahead of me by the National Library for a long period, because there was nowhere to go even if you turn on the siren and I am sure every citizen of this country would have experienced a similar ordeal on the road and that’s compounded often because of the infrastructure work we are doing,” he explained.

The Vice President noted that the Government is committed to expanding the infrastructure of the country and modernising it with the construction of four lane roads, bridges and other connecting roadways.
