19-Y-O mother in Berbice hit-and-run accident succumbs to injuries

Four days after she was involved in an accident along the Line Path Public Road in Corentyne, Berbice, 19-year-old Kavita Bedsan has succumbed to her injuries.

The woman died this morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

The hit and run accident occurred on Sunday night and resulted in the death of the woman’s nine-month-old baby, Ellie Surujnarine.

Bedsan and the baby’s father, 17-year-old Tushan Surujnarine were injured in the accident, Tushan remains hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

Police said the father was riding an electric bike with his wife and the baby was pillion riders when they were allegedly struck down by a motorcar.

While the baby died on her way to the hospital following the accident, the parents were hospitalised in critical conditions.

The motorcar involved in the accident – a white Fielder wagon – has since been located but the driver – identified as Avinesh Naidoo of Corriverton, Berbice – remains on the run.

Police said the owner of the motorcar, Vidawattie Arjune, of Crabwood Creek was contacted and provided certain information to aid in the investigation.
